Learning to drape with the fabric I hate the most, chiffon. Sure, it’s light and pretty, and it drapes beautifully. But it also pulls, is slippery, and is notoriously frustrating to work with. I’ve never had any previous positive experiences with chiffon, but I’m in a forgiving mood, and I have a sample laying around. Take two of making organza flowers and this time I’m trying out a different method. A spiral strip, and using a thread zapper instead of a candle. If you love inhaling plastic then this method is for you. Initially I thought the thread zapper would be easier to control and faster than using a candle. But I found it way too hot and the direct heat just made the fabric burn, and fibres to stick to the heating element, which gave off wisps of smoke. Sewing pop quiz: Lock in your answer below ⭐️! There’s nothing worse than having pockets of excess fabric in your armhole, especially when you’re wanting a beautifully fitted bodice. Do not fret, it’s an easy fix. Simply push your excess fabric towards your shoulder seam, and adjust the new seam allowance. You’ll notice once you remove any excess fabric in the shoulder seam that these lines aren’t even anymore. So now, we’re going to either add or remove any fabric (depending on your fit and look preferences) to ensure your necklines and underarm are smoothed out and they match up again. Whilst you’re fitting your bodice perfectly, a bonus tip is that the side seam of your bodice should run straight down the body, it shouldn’t sway either to the front or back or the body. Currently holding space for tiny things 🪄. Come make a dress with me! I’m taking one of my popular dress designs and using some scrap fabric to make a tiny version. I’m using my 1:4 scale dress form, which I’m using to drape. Straw tube pull! Use a straw and something pointy to turn a closed end tube in side out 🥤. 1. Insert your closed end tube over something cylindrical, like a large straw. 2. Using something thin, long and strong- like a straw cleaner, push down through the opening of the straw 3. Remove your long pointy thing and your straw to reveal a tube turned inside out! Hot tips for guys and gals who read captions: this large straw is great for tubes 2.5cm and wider. Use a smaller straw for a smaller tube. Dont have a straw? You can also use a safety pin. I prefer this because it’s not poking any holes in the fabric, which is nice if you have a particularly delicate or dramatic fabric. Don’t have a straw cleaner? You can use a skewer or a pencil. This only works for closed end tubes, have something that’s open ended? Aquamarine shell dress 🐚 Creating my own floaty and sheer layers of shell shaped appliqué made from a white cotton. I used three different thread colours to sew the lines in the shells to give subtle dimension to the shells. I’ve been playing around with layering them, and pinching the base of the shells in order to keep them soft and light. And not sit too flat to the body. When was the last time you cleaned your overlocker? I know it’s been a long time, don’t lie to me 🤨. Cleaning an overlocker is essential to keep it running smoothly and extend its lifespan. Dust, lint, and fabric fibers build up in the machine, especially around the blades and looper area. To clean it, unplug the machine, then open the front and side covers to access these areas. Use a small brush or compressed air to carefully remove lint and debris, avoiding blowing it deeper into the machine.
