As the conflict between Israel and Iran continues, the Pentagon has shifted warplanes and an aircraft carrier to the Middle East to protect American troops stationed in the region, a senior Defense official said. There are about 40,000 U.S. service members there. Israel began striking Iran on June 13 after the International Atomic Energy Agency declared that Iran was not complying with its nuclear nonproliferation obligations and passed a resolution against the country for the first time in 20 years on June 12. More than 220 Iranians have been killed and at least 1,200 injured since the bombardment began, Iranian state media reported. A tense standoff between California and the federal government escalated Monday, with federal officials preparing to send in 700 Marines to assist the National Guard and state officials saying they will sue the Trump administration's decision to "trample over" Gov. Gavin Newsom's authority. President Donald Trump said the guard, sent over the objections of local and state leaders, would restore order after clashes between police and protesters angry at his aggressive pursuit of undocumented immigrants. Since Friday, officers have had confrontations with protesters, leading to the use of pepper spray and flash bangs as officials announced more than 120 arrests amid flare ups of vandalism and violence. After federal immigration raids across Los Angeles sparked fear and protests, immigrant laborers still turned up, hoping for work. "We're a little nervous, but we're here looking for work to survive," said one of them, Valencia, who was born in the Tepito neighborhood of Mexico City. "We need money to put food on the table and support our family." The ICE raids have sparked broad concern across Los Angeles, where 32% of its residents were born in another country. The city has long been home to immigrant communities from around the world, and many families have mixed status, with undocumented parents raising children born as American citizens. And while many residents and officials in Los Angeles have sought to tamp down reactions to the sometimes-violent protests, President Donald Trump and his administration have appeared to fan the flames, hurling insults in social media posts and encouraging an aggressive response to protests. The president pledged in a social media post to "liberate Los Angeles from the Migrant Invasion." But to many residents of Los Angeles, there's no invasion, no "illegals" and no freedom to be restored – the city was doing just fine until ICE began detaining people, our reporters Pamela and Trevor found in a series of interviews.
