A support bar, also known as a gallery rail, is a crucial structural element in your engagement ring. 💍 That small bar of metal you see underneath the centre stone, between the claws, is more than just a design detail. Whether it's plain or set with stones (a hidden halo), the support bar plays a major role in keeping your centre stone secure. Many well-known jewellers do not include this in their ring designs, whether for aesthetic reasons or just to save money by using less gold. However, the support bar is actually an integral part of the rings structure as it prevents the stone from shifting in its setting, which could lead to your stone coming loose or even falling out. Here’s why it matters: Firstly, it helps protect your stone. If you accidentally bump your ring, the support bar often takes the impact—not your centre stone. Secondly, it prevents twisting. Especially important for elongated stones, the support bar stops the stone from rotating inside the setting, keeping the claws and stone properly aligned. Finally, and most importantly, the support bar plays a big role in strengthening the claws. Without it, the claws are longer, making them more prone to bending, especially near the base. However, with a support bar in place, the claws are shorter and much stronger. So if you accidentally snag a claw on your ring without a support bar, it is more likely to bend all the way at the base, losing its tension on the stone, meaning there’s a high chance it will fall out. But with a support bar, any bending is usually limited to the upper part of the claw— significantly reducing the risk of the stone falling out. 💍✨ There are a few ring designs that are exceptions to this, but for the most part you always want to include one in your ring! #mistakestoavoid #engagementring #ringtok #ringshopping #jeweller
