Come From Away is a masterclass in acting. Each performer is fully locked in!!!seamlessly shifting between distinct characters with clarity in physicality, objectives, and, yes, accents. 🤣 In an era where it’s tempting to prioritize individual brilliance over storytelling, this show is a breath of fresh air. Every actor steps back just enough to let the narrative lead, and in doing so, they all shine even brighter. What else would you expect from the cream of the crop of Philippine musical theatre? No one is begging to be looked at, yet you can’t take your eyes off any of them. That, to me, is the mark of a generous ensemble. These artists who know how to move with and within the story, not above it. They understand the power of collaboration and the weight of each line, each step, each silence. The entire production is a well-oiled machine. Despite the many moving pieces, it never feels chaotic or overindulgent. That said, Come From Away MNL asks something rare of its audience: presence. It rewards those willing to lean in and truly listen. It’s not about spectacle; it’s about substance. You enter the theater not just to be entertained but to participate/hunger for a good story. Yes, the accents are thick (they admit it themselves!), but within ten minutes, that ceases to matter. There’s a shared understanding in the room that what’s being said is far more important than how it’s being said. The stories take center stage—not embellishments, not ego. As an actor, watching this show is a lesson in restraint, focus, and empathy. It teaches you how to communicate clearly and powerfully with an audience using only the most essential tools. It reminds you that storytelling doesn’t need to be grand to be impactful. It just needs to be honest. It’s unpretentious. It’s moving. It’s like hearing your favorite tito tell a story during a salu-salo: raw, human, and deeply felt. As a young actor, Come From Away MNL pushed me to examine how I tell stories. It challenged me to ask: Am I connecting? Am I serving the story first? Some of my friends seemed to crave for more originality, and some suggested it leaned too favorably toward American patriotism. While I hear those critiques, I also believe that the show’s immediate, heartfelt message transcends these (especially coming from a first time viewer). The show is about kindness, community, and humanity. And in today’s world, that feels radical enough. At the end of the show, people don’t just clap. They connect. Strangers talk. Hugs are exchanged. There’s this subtle but very real shift in the room, like we all remember that, yes, people can be good. That shared hope is the power of theatre at its best. So if you’re an aspiring actor, watch Come From Away. Not just to be inspired, but to be reminded. That our job is not to be seen, but to help others see. We hold space for empathy, transformation, and truth. And in that, we become more than performers. We become storytellers.
